Divisible by 5

This topic on divisible by 5 will discuss on the divisibility rule of 5 and illustrate few example on the same.

Divisibility Rule of 5: If a number ends with 0 or 5 then the number is divisible by 5.

For Example: 550

Since the number ends with 0 hence the number is divisible by 5

Here are few examples on the divisibility rule of 5

1. State whether the following numbers are divisible by 5 or not and why?

(i) 550

(ii) 630

(iii) 785

(iv) 654

(v) 421

(vi) 3650

(vii) 4201

(viii) 4525

(ix) 5255

(x) 4530

Solution:

(i) 550

550 is divisible by 5 as the last digit is 0

(ii) 630

630 is divisible by 5 as the last digit is 0

(iii) 785

The last digit is 5 hence the number is divisible by 5

(iv) 654

The last digit is 4 not 0 or 5 hence the number is not divisible by 5

(v) 421

421 is not divisible by 5 as the last digit is not 0 or 5

(vi) 3650

3650 is divisible by 5 as the last digit is 0

(vii) 4201

The last digit is 1 not 0 or 5 hence the number is not divisible by 5

(viii) 4525

The last digit is 5 hence the number is divisible by 5

(ix) 5255

5255 is divisible by 5 as the last digit is 5

(x) 4530

4530 is divisible by 5 as the last digit is 0

2. Rewrite the series with the numbers that are divisible by 5 with a different color.

50        896      535      2200    750      4565    8592    1250    3200    4401    4540    630      754

Solution:

50       896      535      2200    750      4565    8592    1250    3200    4401    4540    630      754

3. Fill in the blanks with digit such that the number becomes divisible by 5:

(i) 55 ….

(ii) …. 65

(iii) 75 ….

(iv) 95 ….

(v) 33….

(vi) 11 ….

(vii) 59 ….

(viii) 42 ….

(ix) 4 …. 5

(x) 89 ….

Solution:

(i) 550

(ii) 165

(iii) 750

(iv) 950

(v) 335

(vi) 110

(vii) 595

(viii) 425

(ix) 455

(x) 890

Explanation:

The last two digits should be filled in with either 5 or 0. The digits at other places can be filled by any digit.

4. State why the following numbers are divisible by 5?

(i) 455

(ii) 650

(iii) 890

(iv) 1005

(v) 505

(vi) 275

(vii) 930

(viii) 2020

(ix) 5640

(x) 7535

Solution:

(i) 455

The last digit is 5 hence the number is divisible by 5

(ii) 650

The last digit is 0 hence the number is divisible by 5

(iii) 890

0 is the last digit hence 890 is divisible by 5

(iv) 1005

The last digit is 5 hence the number is divisible by 5

(v) 505

5 is the last digit hence 505 is divisible by 5

(vi) 275

The last digit is 5 hence the number is divisible by 5

(vii) 930

0 is the last digit hence 890 is divisible by 5

(viii) 2020

2020 is divisible by 5 since the last digit is 0
