Digestion

Why is digestion of food necessary?

The food we eat like rice, grains, pieces of vegetables and fruits cannot be directly taken by our body to give energy. The pieces are far too big to pass into the tiny cells of our body. The food must therefore be broken down into smaller and simple pieces. This breaking down of food inside our body is called digestion. These pieces dissolve in the water present in our blood. The blood takes them to all the cells of our body.

Digestion takes place in a number of steps. There are several organs in the body that help in digestion. They together make up our digestive system.
